How do I take the first step?

The easiest way is to ring or e-mail me. Leave a message if I am unavailable and I will get back to you as soon as I can. This first step, and attending your first appointment, are the hardest but show that you are already on the way to making some important changes.

What kind of problems can be helped by therapy?

CBT can be effective with many issues including depression, low mood, stress related issues, anxiety related issues, worry, OCD, trauma, phobias, loss and adjustment issues.

To benefit from CBT, you need to commit yourself to the process. A therapist can help you, but they can only guide you, it is you that needs to do the hard work with the support of your therapist.

Due to the structured nature of CBT it may not be suitable for people with more complex mental health needs or learning difficulties.

What is expected of me in therapy?

Therapy is a space for you to talk and be listened to with respect. Don’t worry if you are not sure where to start, I can ask some questions to help us along the way initially. What we will aim to do together is work out what the problem is, how it has developed, what is keeping it going and what to do to change things.

Can I talk in confidence?

No one will know you are seeking therapy unless you choose to tell them. I will respect your confidentiality at all times, unless there are reasons not to. These occur infrequently but would include: if there was serious threat of harm, either to you or another person, if a child or a vulnerable person were at risk or if a serious crime had been committed. On the rare occasions that I need to break confidentiality I would seek, wherever possible, to discuss this with you first.

Where will my therapy sessions be?

Covid19 has changed how we all work and I now deliver therapy online only. However I do have considerable experience in working with clients using video and telephone and research has shown that this is equally as effective as face to face therapy.  It also offers convenience in that there is no traveling, and sessions can be arranged with greater flexibility. We may be able to incorporate ‘walk and talk’ outdoor therapy into the work we do if appropriate and we would discuss this.

How often do I need to attend?

In my experience, therapy works best if you attend weekly or fortnightly, and we will discuss this at your first appointment.

How much do you charge and what if I need to cancel?

I charge £60 per one hour therapy session.

I do have a cancellation policy. Please could you give as much notice as possible if you need to cancel or rearrange a session and I will try, wherever possible, to offer you an alternative time within the same week if appropriate. Cancellations without giving 24 hours’ notice will incur a cancellation fee.
