Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or CBT is a talking therapy. It has been proven to help treat a wide range of emotional and physical health conditions. CBT looks at how we think about a situation and how this affects the way we act. Similarly our actions can affect how we think and feel. The therapist and client work together in identifying and modifying the client’s unhelpful behaviour and thinking patterns. CBT is goal focused and the aim is for the client to become their own therapist. CBT is an active therapy and the more work you can do on your own in between sessions, the more successful the therapy is likely to be.
(That sounds like hard work doesn’t it, and it is. Changing anything about ourselves is hard work, but with the right help and the right tools it is possible. And sometimes, just sometimes, it isn’t quite as difficult as you think it is going to be.)
CBT is an evidence based therapy, drawing on research evidence to show it can be effective in treating a range of problems and conditions. CBT is recommended by NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) as a treatment in the NHS for many conditions.
CBT can help with many problems including the following:
-social anxiety
-anxiety
-worry/generalised anxiety disorder
-depression and low mood
-panic
-phobias
-post traumatic stress disorder
-obsessive compulsive disorder
If you are not sure if CBT is for you, (or even if I am the right therapist for you) please feel free to call me for a brief free telephone consultation. If we agree that CBT is not appropriate for you at this time I may be able to help you find a more suitable therapy.
I work with people aged 18+.
Counselling and CBT are also available free of charge through the NHS and your GP will be able to give you information about this.
